The Mediation Service

The Mediation Service covers a variety of problem areas in the community such as:-

  • neighbour conflicts – noise; children's behaviour; pets; verbal abuse.
  • boundary disputes – garden boundaries; parking spaces etc
  • community conflicts – anti-social behaviour; harrassment
  • youth clubs and similar organisations – clubs; playgroups; scouts/guides – conflicts; relationship problems with fellow members/leaders
  • schools - bullying/conflicts; verbal abuse
  • Workplace – disputes; verbal abuse; harassment

We work in partnership with the Public Safety Unit which is based at Herne Bay Police Station, and have built up a very successful working relationship with them.

We receive referrals from various sources which include Canterbury City Council, Youth Offending Service, Police, Housing Associations, as well as members of the community contacting us directly themselves.

We have a Restorative Conferencing Training Programme in order which we use in schools and we also carry out Peer Mediation. These have both had a very positive outcome with schools requesting further training.

The Mediation Service provides a professional service which is confidential and free to all parties involved. Our highly trained mediators are non-judgemental and encourage participants to acknowledge their issues and find their own solutions for their future.

Whitstable Volunteer Centre

Whitstable Volunteer Centre is a registered charity based in the Whitstable Castle complex at No 1 Tankerton Road. Next year it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Whitstable Volunteer Centre's main purpose is to advise and encourage volunteers and to help them find the right placement with the right organisation.

•  We have hundreds of volunteering opportunities on our database covering areas as diverse as working with children, conservation, working in charity shops and much, much more.

We also run a number of in-house schemes of our own, most successfully a transport scheme that provides mobility to the elderly and to people with health problems who cannot access public transport. We undertook 15,000 trips last year.

We have our own secondhand bookshop in Harbour Street, run entirely by volunteers with all profits ploughed back into the Centre.

We also have a volunteer gardening scheme - visiting private addresses and helping when residents can no longer manage the upkeep of their own gardens. Again, all work is carried out by volunteers.

You can pop-in to see us about volunteering Monday to Friday, 10am-1pm. To see us outside of those hours you can make an appointment on 01227 772248 or e-mail
